Thieves of the Wood

Thieves of the Wood speelt zich af in het hart van 18th Century Flanders en is een vrij goed periodedrama, ook al valt het tegen het einde van de serie iets te ver in melodramatische wateren. Voor het grootste deel echter, de show doet er goed aan om zijn centrale cast van personages jongleren, met Jan de meest sympathieke uit het bos. Met wat zanderige visuals en een fatsoenlijk productieontwerp is dit Vlaamse drama zeker genoeg om een horloge te rechtvaardigen, ook al is het onwaarschijnlijk dat het de periodedramascène zal ontsteken.

Toegegeven, ik weet niet veel over deze periode van de geschiedenis, dat is partij waarom het drama is zo aantrekkelijk. In het hart van het echter ligt terugkerende soldaat Jan, die ontdekt dat corruptie is wijdverbreid in zijn geboortestad, mede dankzij de zieken en armen verbannen naar de bossen. Met een duidelijke klasse verdelen deze vroege optreden als brandstof voor de conflicten vooruit, aan de andere kant van het hek is Baru, een nieuwe deurwaarder graag bijbrengen van hervormingen en veranderingen. De derde en laatste hoofdverhaallijn draait om Heloise en samen verankert dit trio personages het drama in wezen op de gebruikelijke tropen die je zou verwachten.

Er zijn hints van een Robin Hood-achtige plot op het werk hier en in de hele serie het grootste deel van het drama draait om een weg wordt gebouwd die fungeert als de kern van het conflict voor beide zijden. Als de serie groeit, verandert dit enigszins om meer romantische thema's op te nemen, maar er zijn een paar leuke wendingen laat op dat dingen interessant te houden. Ik zal niet te veel weg te geven, maar het volstaat om te zeggen als je van karakter drama en zeepachtige elementen, Thieves of the Wood is een vrij goede optie.

Esthetisch althans, de show ziet er geweldig uit. Er is een schril contrast tussen de rijken en armen hier, bewust tentoongesteld door middel van extreme close-ups van de modder en vuil, terwijl brede, vegen de foto's van de weelderige interieurs biedt het omgekeerde voor de rijken. Het is een subtiele truc, maar een die goed werkt om de thema's die spelen in het hele seizoen te versterken.

Qua kostuum en productieontwerp doet Thieves of the Wood het goed en er wordt echt in gewerkt om dit zo authentiek mogelijk te maken. Vroeg op is er een specifieke vloek woord gebruikt dat ik moest opzoeken om ervoor te zorgen dat het passend was voor de periode, maar buiten dat, de serie doet er goed aan om dingen consistent en geloofwaardig te houden.

Met fatsoenlijke visuals en een ongewone instelling niet vaak tentoongesteld, Thieves of the Wood niet echt opnieuw uitvinden van het wiel, maar doet een vrij goede baan houden dingen boeiende toch. Als je in de stemming bent voor een periode drama, dit is een vrij goed aanbod en terwijl ik was geen enorme fan van de romantische subplot, er is genoeg hier te maken voor een onopvallend, maar vrij solide seizoen van entertainment.
